A DIY Book Scanner In Every Hackerspace /DIY Kit

Built a scanner? Started to build a scanner? Record your progress here. Doesn't need to be a whole scanner - triggers and other parts are fine. Commercial scanners are fine too.

Hand cut 1/2 inch ply model printed on A4 and cut with a jig saw

I have been following this fourm for a long time and finally decided i'd had enough of just dreaming of my own book scanner and started on the journey to build my own.

Having just read the last post i feel it an appropriate place to show the progress with my own 'handmade' version. :D

And 2 hours later.........Check it out here - viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1256
All comments welcome - Happy scanning :)

Brilliant. Yours is halfway done and mine is not. What pushed me to cnc was the need for more than one machine once others got interested. Do you have access to a drill press?

dbmoura is there a reason for you using the Allen screws that protrude out instead of the ones that would have been tucked in the holes when screwed in, is this to make the screws more accessible to take apart or just a design preference? I just asked because I am having my pieces cut out soon so I want to start shopping for the fasteners, screws and other miscellaneous pieces before its done. I'm using your PDF with the screws and dimensions listed to try and find them off of fastanel.

First, we have great work around, so many people sharing: bravo! Thank you ateeq85 for your comments.
I've tried to do an extensive work to document details and adjustments have been made as I tried to build one for myself. I am updating the drawings and lists to upload it here, so I can't make you sure yet about final details.
Screws and other materials: my opinion is that they always let us thinking and improvements are dynamics. Instead of hex sockets heads, countersunk heads can be used. Maybe it is better when the proper countersink is made.
I hope I can give more help in a few days time.
I am also tayloring a cover so I hope to publish what I achieved soon.

Are the axles for the book "cart" simply machine screws fixed into pre-drilled holes?

Yes. In my original case they were wood screws with washers, later upgraded to sheet metal screws with bigger caps.

Hi, is there somewhere I can get plans for this scanner with the most recent revisions? I have a window of access to a CNC router but am nervous about using the originally posted plans without all the added fixes that have been discussed.

Thanks.

Discussion needed/Looking for opinions.

Hi Muper. We did have a place until Saturday, when GaryK deleted his posts, which contained the latest changes. I have emailed him and I suspect other members have PM'd him. We haven't heard back from him.

Here are the issues.

1. It is and was an Open Hardware design. Therefore all changes are open source, including GaryK's.
2. However, I respect GaryK and would like to give him a chance to speak and of course want to give him proper credit for his work and make him feel appreciated.
3. I have backups of the forum and all the files ever posted, so I can easily restore the files if we decide to go that way.

Therefore
4. I would like to hear some community discussion here in this thread, particularly from people who have contributed a design idea or change or worked from GaryK's additions. I have a pretty good idea of the right thing to do, but I would like some discussion/consensus here.

Since Cfmorill has used GaryK's design and seems to be making his own progress with it maybe his progress with it can be a reference for GaryK's modified build.
