Alternative to the Canon DR-DC10 DC Coupler?

Postby Heelgrasper » 16 Apr 2012, 08:21

Since at least some of the newer Canon PowerShot models has no power input I will at some point need a Canon DR-DC10 DC Coupler like this: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/762550-REG/Canon_5190B001_DR_DC10_DC_Coupler.html. They cost quite a bit here in Denmark (about 25% of the prize of my new Canon PowerShot A810) so I'm wondering if someone know any cheaper alternatives?

Basicly it's "just" a question of replacing the power from two AA-batteries so there might be a use for this kind of adapter for other products. The required AC adapter I should have an alternative to at about 1/3 of the prize of the original Canon product.

There are instructables on this:

and

and there are "battery adapters" to give you the size and shape that you need:

And you know what's stupid? The Sony DSC-WX10's that I got for installation in the DIY Book Scanner at the NextFab makerspace are really good. But they stuck the power socket on the bottom, where I can't get to it. But even if I drilled a hole to get to it, there's another problem: the camera is designed so that it will only use AC power when in playback or off. Not during recording. I have no idea why -- noise? Elitism (the con/prosumer divide)? This makes it very difficult to use these cameras for relatively long books, and especially with WiFi cards, which take even more power.

In any case, I'm planning on making some kind of acrylic fake battery pack that can be hooked directly to an AC adaptor.

Thank you all for your help. It will really help me make a cheap solution to the problem.
