Ok got that backwards CTRL is the one that you will use. well if REF goes low with light off you can use that as a status indcator.

Yep, that's right. I think the REF pin could actually power an arduino. I'm thinking about getting rid of the Arduino and just switching the whole thing some other way, maybe an R/C circuit or monostable multivibrator also hooked up to camera outs. The fact that the BuckPuck gives 5V means it could also trigger CHDK enabled powershots... lots of nice options here.

I like the fact that you add the leds in parallel or series and the buckpuck will adjust the current for you.
series-paralle circuit
easy to attach to an arduino

Souped up Flashlights- Cultural Aspects
I have been informed by my husband its about, "More Power". Take a tactical flashlight and greatly increase the output and make it more flexible to use and your, "the big man on campus". I believe in part if all y'all need a tac light then the brightah the bettah! heh

hi all,
got the cameras,2 canon a590s. downloaded scantailor. still need to build the scanner but slowly getting stuff together. lighting is the next thing. i have found a UK source well European anyway, for the cree Q5 modules. the electronics look fairly easy. what i am not sure about is how to arrange the cree Q5s. how have people got them orientated? i thought in a line inside a incandescent floodlight reflector might work? open to ideas on this though.

Re: Let's talk about Lighting
I've been arranging them in a line, sometimes with a reflector and sometimes without. I'm going to post a bit more on the lighting I designed for DonnaA's project in a few days, you'll see that there are three bare LEDs in a line on that lighting system.
The BuckPuck is a real winner, BTW, get the 1000mA model with dimming.

Re: Let's talk about Lighting
has anyone used the 10 watt led floods with 2 A590s? the crees look good with the buckpucks but the 10 watt floods look simpler. i will mainly be scanning old paperbacks no images.

So the BuckPuck that you recommend is the 3021-A-I- 1000mA version http://www.ledsupply.com/03021-a-i-1000.php ? I ask to ensure accuracy since I would like to buy one sometime soon.

The specific part number on my order was this one:
http://www.ledsupply.com/03023-d-e-1000.php (3023-D-E-1000 Wired 3023-D-E-1000 1 15.98)
It's wired instead of PCB mount, has external control, and runs at 1000mA
