Need a scanner in San Jose / Bay Area

Postby roger69 » 18 Apr 2012, 00:04

I've inherited a ledger full of family names and details kept by my great-grandfather. It was written in the late 1800s and is in good shape, but I definitely cannot open the book flat. There are two issues I need to deal with: the writing crosses the seam of the page, and the writing is what I would describe as Victorian copperplate.

I don't have the woodworking resources to build the DIY scanner at the moment, so I'm hoping to find someone or some organization in the San Francisco area who can help me with getting this scanned. I'm in San Jose but I'm willing to go just about anywhere in the bay area. I just want to get this book scanned so I can share the information with my family.

Any help appreciated!

Would one of the Hackerspace kit scanners work? How big is the ledger? Does the writing cross the seam of the page most of the time or just a few pages? Perhaps you could scan the book and then take extra shots of selected pages.

Posting a couple of images might be helpful.

I'm building one of the Hackerspace kits now so it'll be a few weeks before it's ready. (I'm not a woodworker, I don't have my cameras yet...)

FYI there is a complete beta model hosted at Ace Monster Toys in Oakland.
