Hand Scanner Setup

Hi,

Instead of using cameras to take the pics - has anyone come up w/ a design that includes a hand scanner:

Perhaps something that has a single rail attached a little above the books thickness with this scanner attached. I've never really used this, but are there any thoughts on this type of setup?

We've definitely looked at these devices from time to time. I think the consensus is that using cameras is faster, because you image the entire page rather than one line at a time. On the other hand, the resolution for a scanner head would be higher than that of a camera. Nevertheless, cameras are getting higher and higher pixel counts all the time.

I had that exact scanner for a few days while I was building my first bookscanner. It didn't work well:

- Like a flatbed scanner there is an edge all the way around the optic window and the scanner couldn't get into the inside gutters of the books... especially paperbacks.

- You have to roll the scanner along the page in a constant motion, at a constant speed, and maintain that motion in a completely even manner. It's hard to do without a fram or guide, and the text inevitably came out with a huge amount of warping.

It's just not very good for archive quality media conversion. I bought one of these almost 8 years back. It works much better, but it's still not great:
