Re: Archivist Quill and PiScan – Modding, Managing, Improving
Is this mod thread intended to be continued by the OP, or is it complete? The the only real problem I have had with mine is dust accumulation. I don't have room for an additional piece of furniture, so I may have to live with it. Caveat - I've only done one (albeit sizeable) scan job - my high schoo...

Re: safe hand removal of plastic binder combs
Very good observations and thoughts, especially trying to locate a comb binding machine at a local library. There are a couple of historical society libraries in the area that I have worked with on projects in the past that might have such a tool, and would almost certainly allow me to use one grati...

safe hand removal of plastic binder combs
I need to scan a rare, and somewhat valuable, book that consists of ~100 8-1/2 x 11" pages bound with a plastic comb. I was all ready and eager to do this with my Archivist Quill, when it dawned on my slow faculties that the comb was going to interfere with the final platen position, and that I...

Re: Creating a Digital Library
I'm afraid I can't answer that one. I haven't ever tried archive.org. Let me look at it. Well, it seems to have a lot in it. I may have to check it out. At first glance it is kind of confusing. Bill I can understand that. It doesn't exhibit a tremendous amount of structure. To me it is geared more ...

Re: Creating a Digital Library
I haven't been replying to this thread before, but now I think I might be able to help you. I have been doing just about what you are talking about... Good information to know, thanks. I am aware of the Project Gutenburg library, but have spent more time looking for book copies at archive.org. In y...

Re: Creating a Digital Library
John, You hinted at some of the answers to these questions in your reply to Daniel R., but I'm curious about the specific motivation. Did you scan books for which good quality digital copies were freely available? If so, why? Are you satisfied with the results of your investment in time and resource...

e-book on tablet guidelines
I sure this is in a FAQ here somewhere, but I seem to need help finding it. I'm using a 3 yo Archivist Quill to scan some bound books of various sizes, and also some genealogical documents. I have no difficulty with the scanning process, and it's fairly easy to bind the image files into a pdf. If I ...

Re: scanning & processing 78 RPM record labels
Neartly two years late, but just to bring this thread to a conclusion, I ultimately donated nearly all of the 78s to Internet Archive, so that eliminated the need for label scanning.

Re: OCR for 78 RPM record labels
LOL Looks like replies crossed... I should be able to come up with a stubby spindle that is the same height as the records are thick. I'm considering some sort of line-generating laser to project a "horizontal" line on the label(s) for alignment purposes. I'm assuming the text recoognition...

Re: OCR for 78 RPM record labels
Thanks for the reply. I thought of a using a spindle, the catch there is that the Archivist has a "V" shaped tray that gets elevated to the underside of a likewise "V" shaped glass platen (2 camera system,) so I would need to use something of a height and material that would not ...
