First off, i'd like to say hi. I' discovered the site a month ago and should be ready to get started on my own build in the next month or so. Having said that I'm very excited about the build that was at maker faire in nyc this past weekend. It was great to meet daniel and see the machine in action.
Daniel, you mentioned a low cost box build that would serve as a good intro into the issues i might come across in making/using my own scanner. Could you point me in the direction of this build?

Sure. Here are the plans on Instructables: http://www.instructables.com/id/Bargain ... board-Box/ - but here's a plan you can just download: http://diybookscanner.org/PDF/Bargain-P ... rd-Box.pdf
James Simmons, JDsimmons on this forum, has published what is probably the most complete and well-thought out beginners guide to scanning in existence. Check it here:

It goes over the box, Scan Tailor, and more. In fact, start there and come back to the Instructable only if you need it.
