embedding hyperlinks in text in these forum posts

Post by reggilbert »

To whom it may concern,

I've have been posting comments with links but knew only how to cut and paste a URL into a comment like so:

http://www.google.com

But embedding links, especially long ones, into words looks much nicer.

The forum FAQ says there's a guide to the phpBBB software that powers the forum located on the forum home page, but I could not find it (Daniel: did I miss it?). However, a general Internet search eventually turned up the following info.

You can embed a URL in text by clicking the "URL" icon in the row of rectangular formatting code icons just above the message box. This will insert "" code into your message wherever your cursor is. You can also simply type these codes (without the quotes).

You can embed a URL into a word or words by:

1) putting the words you want to act as a hyperlink between the two codes

2) putting the URL inside the first code like so: [url=http:www.//google.com]

So the final phrase in the message window before submitting the message would read (without the hyphens inserted in this example to keep the phpBBB software from reading the codes as codes in this post itself):

[-url=http://www.google.com]This is text acting as a hyperlink[-/url]

which, if the hyphens are taken out, would look like this:

This is text acting as a hyperlink

It is does not appear to be necessary to put literal URLs, URLS you are not trying to embed in anything, between the codes. This was presumably the purpose of the codes in earlier versions of the software, but now the phpBBB software seems to turn any standalone URL into a hyperlink even if you do not include the codes.

One of the many things we/I need to improve about the forum is the support info. No, you did not miss it, I don't think it was installed. Thanks for the nice guide to hyperlinking, it has come up more than once.
