Another 80/20 Build

Built a scanner? Started to build a scanner? Record your progress here. Doesn't need to be a whole scanner - triggers and other parts are fine. Commercial scanners are fine too.

Another 80/20 Build

Post by railman »

Thanks to everyone here for sharing your knowledge and ideas and especially translucent1 for the great pictures of his setup.
The main frame of the scanner is made out of 80/20 extrusions 1010, 1020 and the cradle is MDF. The platen is Plexi glass.
Tools used were a 10" table saw 10" miter saw and a drill press and some hand tools.
This build took me over a month of gathering parts and piecing them together. The aluminum pieces are not cheap but I did not pay full price for them, got them on ebay used so thats why it took so long to build. Hopefully the cad drawings and pictures will be helpfull to some one.

This is excellent. Have you weighed this system?

I weighed just the aluminum when I first recieved it and it was 25lbs. So it's around 31.5lbs.

Wow, this is a beautiful build. Thanks for coming back to share it here. Do those slides mind the side-load of the platen? Is the operation real smooth?

The slides are THK SSR20 20mm rails, these bearings are like a tank.
Theres no play at all in them . I had to reinforce the frame of the platen to stop the racking but now it is solid.
If anyone needs any more pictures or cad drawing please let me know. All the deminsions should be in the cad files posted.

railman, that is seriouslynice! You could probably put that on a glass table top with some indirect light and pass it as art just as easily as a functional device.

Absolutely beautiful.
iPad: Over it. Android FTW.

Professionally built. Kudos. Could you please upload cad drawing. I am planning to build one with 80/20 parts. Thanks.

Edit: I see it was already posted. Sorry.
